Brownie Root Beer traces its history to Detroit, where it was produced by the Atlas Beverage Company Beginning around 1929. Founded by Walter Tomaszewski, Atlas was one of the city’s independent neighborhood bottlers, supplying local stores, restaurants, and families with an assortment of soft drinks. Among those beverages, Brownie Root Beer became one of the company’s most memorable brands. Its playful name and distinctive brownie character helped it stand apart from the many regional root beers competing for attention in Depression-era Detroit.

Atlas remained a family-operated business for decades, surviving long after many small bottlers had disappeared. Brownie became part of Detroit’s local soda tradition—the kind of hometown beverage remembered from corner groceries, family gatherings, and cases of returnable glass bottles.

After the original bottling company closed, Orca Beverage later brought the Brownie name back to the marketplace. Orca developed today’s version as Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer, adding a smooth, caramel-rich character to the revived brand. Today’s Brownie is therefore both a tribute and a new chapter: a vintage Detroit soda name preserved for another generation, now enjoyed with the distinctive caramel cream flavor created by Orca Beverage.
